Crown Metropol, Perth – The Portal

The well appointed Crown Metropol, Perth completed in 2011 is another offering under the Metropol Brand to the group. It demonstrates that the feel of the hotel is driven by local context with a luxurious base, rather than a prescribed branded look.

The existing building, has an impression today, of a cruise liner on the banks of the Swan River. Departure point to luxury.

In managing the  delivery of this project at Blainey North, it was great to work closely with the Crown Project managers to ensure the mechanics of the hotel guestroom module room design worked functionally for all guest needs, whilst maintaining the 5 star rating within the design direction set by the mock up room.

The 400 room hotel over 10 levels also offers 14 suites and 2 understated rockstar-uber-luxury Infinity suites all designed by Blainey North and team. Let’s take you on a journey. . . .The lobby experience has been shared in a previous post, but I thought it relevant to set the arrival scene with a few pics. This post, is about the rooms.

From the vast atrium space, the guest arriving, enters the portal. The refurbishment was done whilst operating as the Intercontinental Hotel Burswood.

The long corridors of this Y shaped hotel layout were punctuated with inset carpet patterns at doors, artwork and pools of light.

The rooms are divided up into a series of dark timber and granite portal frames, segmenting the space and creating zones. A very uncomplicated, understated palette of finishes, being defined with the high contrast framing.

It was great to have the experience of staying in the mock up room on visits to Perth, whilst developing and documenting the proejct. Really getting to know the product, and enjoy it too.

The maritime references to the heady days of 1920’s steam ship travel are elegantly understated. For high quality level of execution required of a 5 star luxury scheme with a simple refined concept, it takes serious dedication to resolving the details well, so the eye travels to areas in the space you want it to. Almost the same rigour that Minimalism requires. Every Dimension is crucial. The builders, PS Structures, were awesome to work with.

Chromed trim angles or gloss Licora timber frames or defines every surface. All walls in this 5 star hotel, are textured decorative (yet robust), wallpapers. The use of mirror is clever, reflecting corners and slot areas of views back to the room, increasing the perception of space

The generous suites all have views of the city of Perth and serpentine bend in the lovely Swan river, from bedrooms and the sweeping balconies. The sunsets can be spectacular from here.
