El Fenn boutique hotel in Marrakech is the love child of Howell James and Vanessa Branson. The former Riad was converted into an intimate 28 room hotel with 3 swimming pools, 3 courtyards, massive rooftop terrace and a hammam steam room. All the guestrooms are uniquely styled with rich and varied aged colour that only hand plastered walls can achieve.
El Fenn evolved and expanded into surrounding Riads with the help of local architect Amine Kabbaj. Local craftsmen used traditional techniques in the conversion, maintaining a strong link to its history and retro furniture was sourced from local flea markets, giving all the rooms more defined characters. Just in case individual colour schemes wasn’t enough! Two of the pools are lined in Carrara marble and the rooftop plunge affords views of the ancient Atlas mountains. I am seduced by the courtyard facing verandas, with their aged timber doors and drapes for light control and extra romance.
The rooms don’t have TV’s or phones, encouraging the guest to explore and soak up the exotic lushness of the property or venture out to the souks, the Medina or Djemaa el Fina square. The intensity and variety of colour hues never seems to overwhelm as it often does in a new build, probably because of the depth of aged texture in the architectural details and furnishings.
